The Truth About Mixing Metals In Your Home
Your home should be a reflection of your style, which means if you want to use crazy colors, then do it! This also applies to using different metals around your house as well. Choose one main metal
When you are thinking about adding cabinet hardware to your kitchen, choose one metal that will be the focus of your room. If you have stainless steel appliances, you might want to use silver as your focus. Once you have your dominant metal picked out, you can choose a secondary metal that compliments the dominant metal. For example, maybe you want a classic black and white kitchen. Use silver as your dominant metal and then use a black metal as an accent metal. It'll add depth, a pop of color and personality to your kitchen, without going too overboard.
Keep it consistent
While it is okay to have multiple metals throughout your house, you will still want to have some sort of consistency. Having silver and black metals in the kitchen, gold and bronze in the living room and cast iron and ceramic in the bathroom are going to overwhelm you and your guests. Keep consistency throughout every room in your house. They don't always have to be the same metals, but just something similar. For example, if you are using the silver and black metals in your kitchen, then use a similarly light and dark metal palette in your living room.
Don't forget about non-metals
You may be one of those people who do not like to mix and match metals and that is okay! Another alternative is to mix one metal with furniture that you have around the room. If you have gray furniture, use some kind of dark metal, such as bronze or cast iron, for the metals in the room. You can even match it with different electronics, wood furnishings or carpet in your room. Be creative, but be comfortable with your creative choices.
Don't try too hard
Mixing metals is fun to do, but it is easy to get carried away. If you are having trouble with metals competing and the room looking too busy, try sticking to just two different types of metals. Then, use a warm metal, such as copper, with a cool metal, such as chrome. These are two different metals, but they complement each other beautifully. Using two warm metals, such as copper and bronze, can make the room look heavy, crowded and small. If you are careful, however, you can make two warm metals or two cool metals work beautifully.
Mixing metals in your space can add some beautiful results, but you should be cautious with the metals you choose.
